Professor Farnsworth focuses on the development of GIS-based decision support systems to improve the planning, assessment, and implementation of state and federal conservation and natural resource programs and watershed management programs. Professor Farnsworth's current projects include the following:
  • An economic-environmental decision model to assess the effectiveness of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (a USDA program for reducing resource degradation and nonpoint-source pollution on working agricultural lands). A forest stewardship decision model for identifying highly valued forestlands in Indiana .
  •  A watershed management decision model for assisting watershed groups in assessing water quality impacts associated with changes in land use and agricultural practices.

Each project also contains an outreach component to facilitate the transfer of research to the relevant audiences.
