Climbing the growth chart

When Purdue University students returned to campus this fall, many of them landed in the College of Agriculture. Undergraduate enrollment grew again this year, and another large freshman class was admitted. Total undergraduate enrollment is 2,479, compared to 2,452 a year ago. Of this total, 611 are freshmen.
“It’s great to see the surge of interest in Purdue Agriculture, and I attribute a lot of the growth to new opportunities in the food and agriculture industry,” says Randy Woodson, Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture. “The booming popularity of biofuels, environmental concerns, and the need to ensure the safety and quality of our food supply all contribute to a demand for students who have studied agriculture disciplines.”
Animal sciences continues to enroll the most freshmen, but enrollment is growing in others areas, too, such as biochemistry and entomology. Also, more students come from non-rural backgrounds. Students from large cities and the surrounding suburbs who apply to Purdue Agriculture outnumber those who apply from rural areas.
