Curriculum Vitae

Before coming to Purdue Sanders spent almost twelve years overseas doing his PhD fieldwork and working for the Ford Foundation in Brazil (Fortaleza, Ceara), as the economist in the Bean Program in CIAT (Cali, Colombia) and representing Purdue in a university development program in Portugal (Evora).

Since 1983 he has been at Purdue teaching economic development (see the link to his 2009 course notes) and doing field research focusing on the introduction of technological change in the semiarid agriculture of Sub-Saharan Africa and Central America ( Sanders-Shapiro, Vitale-Sanders, Abdoulaye-Sanders ) At the start of 2009 he had made 87 trips to Sub-Saharan Africa concentrating his activities recently in the Sahelian countries of  Niger, Senegal and Mali.

Since 2003 he has been involved in a three  Sahelian country Production-Marketing project designed to accelerate farm level technology adoption by introducing new marketing strategies for farmers’ organizations and collaborating with food scientists and animal scientists in developing contacts and working relationships  with food and feed processors. This project is based upon the technology and marketing strategy recommendations in the 2006 American Society of Agronomy handbook on semiarid regions.

Sanders specializes in the economics of technological change. He has done many impact studies including three journal articles on the impact of agricultural technologies on women. As of 2009  he has 103 professional publications (journals and book chapters). In 1996 his work with his graduate students of 13 years in Africa was reported in The Economics of Agricultural Technology in Semiarid, Sub-Saharan Africa published by Johns Hopkins University Press (co-authored with two of his former graduate students).
